On the 21st November 2024 we'd raised £15,306 with 101 supporters in 70 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
Perran Tennis was established in 1896 as a social club for the community, the land given by Mr. Pill of Droskyn at a rent of one penny per annum !!
The pavilion was rebuilt in 1909 and continues to this day as our clubhouse.
In 1913 the club was affiliated to the LTA and by 1930 there were 8 grass courts and one hard court.
Mr Winston Graham(renowned author of Poldark) was voted Chairman in 1951 ,the courts were purchased and then in 1965 were handed over to the Parish Council due to running costs.
Serving both Perranporth, the wider community and visitors Perran Tennis now has 3 floodlit hard courts and 6 grass courts which is run by a small group of volunteers.
We have various club nights, competitions and socials and members regularly participate in the summer and winter leagues.
There is a full coaching programme available by our LTA licensed level 4 coach Matt Trudgeon and some of our younger players are now playing for Cornwall.
We continually strive to maintain and improve the facilities but this gets more difficult with increasing costs . It is a vital community asset for the well-being of both young and old , for the local schools and as a facility for visitors to Perranporth.
Why are we crowdfunding?
The Power of Community
Help Us Light Up the Future of Perran Tennis Club!
We're crowdfunding to upgrade to environmentally friendly LED lights to reduce our carbon footprint and save energy costs. For over 100 years, our club has been serving the community of Perranporth and visitors alike, with six grass courts, three hard courts, and a historic clubhouse. As we look to the future, we're excited to take a step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach.

How we’ll spend the money raised:
If we raise £7,500 Sports England will pledge us a further £7,500 the total sum of which we will use to convert our floodlights to LED. We have 3 hard courts tennis all of which have floodlights to enable them to be used year round.
Being so close to the sea in Perranporth is wonderful, but the wet (at times) and salty atmosphere has corroded the old halogen floodlights and they need to be upgraded now with energy efficient LED lights at a cost of £15,296.
Our wonderful club is run entirely by volunteers, who give up their time freely and generously, we receive no regular grants for maintenance, so we have to raise the funds ourselves and are delighted to have this opportunity of a pledge from Sports England.
LED lighting is far more environmentally friendly and cheaper to run. With the low energy consumption we are working to reduce our carbon footprint. Currently (£7 per hour), the lights can often take 20 to 30 minutes to come on, LED lights are not only much cheaper to run, they come on straight away!
Community Impact:
Throughout the winter, these LED floodlights will allow us to continue competing in the LTA Tennis Cornwall Winter League, creating the opportunities for those who wish to develop their competitive skills. These matches bring in players from different areas of Cornwall and allow them to see what we have as a community to offer here in Perranporth.
Having these state of the art floodlights allows the benefits of playing tennis to be maintained throughout the darker months of the year. The health benefits include increasing aerobic capacity, lowering resting heart rate and blood pressure, increasing bone density, lowering body fat and improving muscle tone, strength and flexibility. There are also social and mental health benefits of tennis, it is a great way to meet people and spend time with family and friends, it is suitable for all ages and skill levels and it is helpful in reducing stress.
Our goals for this project are quite simply to get more people active by playing tennis. Currently, people that have work or have other commitments during the daytime are unable to properly use our facilities, especially during late summer and autumn/winter when it gets dark earlier. The level of lighting precludes elderly or people with less than perfect vision from playing. People may have concluded that tennis is only a summer sport to be played during the day.
We will publicise the fact we are running late evening sessions for all, under our fantastic new lighting and these sessions would be free. We would then encourage people who have tried these sessions to join and get involved in our community club.
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
