Dear Friends
On behalf of Kijana Kwanza, I would like to thank you for your donations to support the children of Halima Orphanage who were evicted from their premises some 2 weeks ago.
During the interim period, the children have been moved to a vacated property at our shelter in Kariwa Village, with some of our older students moving out to make space for them. Initially they came across as scared and uncertain about what was happening, but they now seem to be settling in well. It was lovely to see them laughing and playing on Sunday, when I spent the day with them, celebrating the national holiday. Since most of the children arrived with few possessions, we have provided them with new clothing and personal items, each child has received a medical check-up and tested for transmittable diseases and the few who are not in school, are in the process of being enrolled. We look forward to giving them a brighter future and a permanent place to stay in the near future.
Our inital proposal was to purchase the original property in which the children were residing, but in consultation with local government, we believe that constructing a purpose built children's home with the additional space for play areas and add-on services, provides a better solution to the problem. Whilst a more expensive option, we have secured institutional donors who have pledged to double the funds raised so far, in light of the updated proposal, to kick start this project.
However, I recognise that our original appeal mentioned the purchase of a property, rather than constructing a home for the children from scratch. I would therefore humbly request your permission to use your donation in this way, with the same overall objective of providing a comfortable and sustainable option for the children of Halima Orphanage, and no doubt many more orphaned and abandoned children, as well as the growing numbers of street children in Moshi, Tanzania.
I thank you once again, and hope that you will support this initiative. I will continue to provide updates via our social media channels and mailing list.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Twenty orphaned boys, aged 6-12 years, were evicted from their home and their possessions discarded on the street. The organisation where they stayed, Halima Orphanage, has closed down.
Faced with a night on the streets, I immediately requested Moshi Municipality to transfer legal guardianship of the children to Kijana Kwanza. But with limited space, our older students have given up their beds and are sleeping on mattresses in the office and corridors.
I am launching an emergency appeal to purchase the property in which they were living previously.
Please give generously.
For more information or if you can help us fundraise for this appeal, do not hesitate to drop me a message via WhatsApp at +44 7903 986 022.
